A student at Baldwyn Elementary has died after being hit by a truck while getting on a school bus on Wednesday morning.
9-year-old Dalen Thomas was crossing the road to get on the bus at his stop near County Road 2578 when a westbound Toyota pickup truck didn’t stop and hit him.
Following the crash, Thomas was taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was later airlifted to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis where he later died from his injuries.
Troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the scene, and the driver of the truck has now been charged. 22-year-old Hunter Newman was charged with one count of Aggravated Assault as the school district has reportedly stated that the bus was properly stopped.
The crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Mississippi Highway Patrol Accident Reconstruction Team.
Newman’s bond was set at $10,000.
