CHOCTAW, Miss.–It’s a repeat of the same headline from four years ago. Former Miko Beasley Denson will challenge the election that put Chief Phyliss J. Anderson in for another term as the first female chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.
Anderson won the run-off Wednesday by less than 200 votes, after absentees were counted. The Tuesday run-off was too close to call because the two were less than 50 votes apart, with about 300 absentee votes to be counted.
After they were counted Wednesday, the final tally was 1,907 for Anderson and 1,745.
The office of tribal chief pays about $400,000 per year. When Anderson was elected four years ago, Denson challenged the election successfully and had a new election declared, which he also lost.
