WASHINGTON, D.C.- Sen. Thad Cochran has voted to recommend Sonny Perdue, former Georgia Governor, as the next Secretary of Agriculture.
A bipartisan majority of Senate Agriculture Committee voted Thursday to sent Perdue’s nomination to the full Senate for consideration.
The former Governor also received support from 650 agriculture groups in the U.S., including those in Mississippi. That list is made up of the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation, Mississippi Peanut Growers Association, Mississippi Rice Council, Mississippi Soybean Association, Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association, Southern Cotton Ginners Association, Southern Peanut Farmers Federation.
“I am confident in your [Purdue] leadership, in your insights, your experiences – all to be brought to the challenge of the Office of Secretary of Agriculture. I’m confident that you’re going to do a fine job. We look forward to working closely with our country’s interests, economic interests as well,” said Cochran.
He met with Perdue on Jan. 30 to discuss issues facing agriculture in Mississippi and the nation. The nomination will now be sent to the full Senate for confirmation.
