Congressman’s staffer charged for tax evasion

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman Bennie Thompson’s chief of staff is facing charges of tax evasion.

Isaac Lanier Avant was charged on Monday in federal court for five-counts of misdemeanor tax evasion.

IRS officials claim Avant wrongly claimed that he was exempt from federal income taxes in May of 2005. Those were withheld from his paycheck until January of 2013.

Avant said it was a misunderstanding and when given the chance he will explain the situation in full. He hopes that he will presumed innocent until that time comes.

Avant will be given that chance on September 13.
