A couple on the coast has been charged for the death of a 1-year-old child.

According to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, 27-year-olds Thomas Cannette and Cassandra Lopresto, of Biloxi, have been charged with three counts of felony child neglect after the child was found dead behind a sofa at the couple’s home on Lamey Bridge Road on December 3rd.

Officers responded to the home, and the unresponsive child was taken to a local hospital but pronounced dead shortly after. It was later determined that the child was left alone for “an extended period of time” and got stuck behind the couch. The cause of death was ruled as asphyxiation.

At the time officers arrived, two other children were found inside of the home that was in “deplorable condition.” The children also showed signs of abuse and neglect. They were taken into the custody of the Department of Human Services after they were treated at the hospital.

After a search of the home, investigators also found drug paraphernalia and Cannette and Lopresto were taken into custody.

Both suspects are being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center on a $750,000 bond.
