Danny Glover to speak at Tougaloo College

Actor, director and labor activist Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon, The Color Purple) will speak at Tougaloo College’s Woodworth Chapel at noon on Friday about the need for public support for Nissan workers who face company resistance to their efforts to unionize.

According to the Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan, Nissan workers say they have been threatened or intimidated for their support for unionizing in an effort to improve working conditions at Nissan’s Canton plant.

Tougaloo College’s NAACP Youth Council is hosting the event.

“We must not allow ourselves to dance with our oppressors but stand firm in our beliefs of knowing the distinct difference between right and wrong,” said Marquise Hunt, Tougaloo College NAACP youth council president.

The Tougaloo event is sponsored by the Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan; the Tougaloo College Reuben V. Anderson Pre-Law Society; the Tougaloo College Chapter NAACP; and Prospects of Freedom/Community Wellness/Critical Awareness of Oppression.

Glover will also participate, along with U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, in the upcoming “March on Mississippi” in support of Nissan workers, which will take place from 12:30 PM to 3 PM on Saturday, March 4, 2017.

News Mississippi will be at the events and will bring you more updates as they occur.
