Driver safety enforced after child is killed getting off the school bus

PONTOTOC COUNTY, Miss.- A young girl was killed in Pontotoc after a car swerved around a stopped school bus, hitting her while she de-boarded.

Amiya Braxton, 7, was killed on Tuesday near her home while getting off a school bus.

The incident was reported to have happened off of Old Highway 9. The coroner, Kim Bedford, identified the child.

Incidents like this come as an unfortunate reminder of the importance of being extra cautious while driving near a school bus.

“Try not to be impatient. These are our precious children getting on and off the bus. If you are impatient and you go around the bus, chances are you may hit one of them and that is a tragedy none of us want to hear about,” Kristy Melbourne with MDOT said.
