HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Camp Shelby is looking toward the future and focusing their efforts on developing drones. Currently, the military base is partnered with the Open Source Software Institute to research drone development and improve open source programs used for controlling drones.
“We are an expert in open source software. Camp Shelby has the infrastructure and the leadership. They recognize and opportunity,” said John Weathersby Executive Director for the Open Source Software Institute.
“What is so unique about this, is that the only place people can fly test and train these things are places like camp Shelby.”
While the military is more interested in the results of improved drone software. Weathersby says the research is expected be beneficial to all drone developers, not just military.
