Entergy shares safety tips for decorating for Christmas

JACKSON, Miss.- Entergy is reminding people not to be like the Griswold’s from the classic holiday movie, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” Make sure you’re not plugging in too many Christmas lights or you could cause a power outage.

Some important safety measures and energy saving tips to remember are listed below.

OUTDOORS:

-Make sure you’re using outdoor designated lights and good cords.

-Use non-conducting fiberglass or wooden ladders when working with strings of lights.

-Don’t replace bulbs when the electricity is on.

-Keep bulbs away from flammable material.

-Hang sockets downward to keep the rain from getting in.

-Keep connections and lights off of the ground by hanging them over wooden stakes.

INDOORS:

-If you chose a live tree make sure it’s fresh and that the needles won’t fall out easily.

– Place the tree in water and keep it away from heaters or the fireplace.

– Examine your lights before putting them up, make sure there are no frayed wires or loose sockets.

– Make sure all light sockets have bulbs in them.

-Keep bulbs off of tree branches.

– Never use lights on a metallic tree, it could become electrified.

– Place wires where they can’t trip anyone.

– Unplug decorations when you’re not in the room.

Don’t forget, hanging too many lights can cause a temporary city-wide power shortage and your neighbors won’t like that.
