COLUMBUS, Miss.- Attorney General Jim Hood has formally charged former police officer Canyon Boykin, 26, of manslaughter.

The incident in question happened in October of 2013. Boykin, while still employed by the Columbus police department, shot and killed Ricky Ball while Ball was fleeing from a traffic stop.

The indictment said that the shooting was unnecessary, thus the charges of manslaughter. The case is being investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and will be prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Stanley Alexander.

Boykin’s bond was set at $20,000 and he could face up to 20 years in prison.
