Freedom From Religion Foundation petitions for Christian flag removal in Rienzi

A Christian flag flying over a veteran’s memorial has been called a step over the religious freedom line in a small Alcorn County town.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to the mayor of Rienzi demanding that the flag be taken down.

“Federal courts of appeals regularly hold that memorials featuring religious emblems or messages are illegal,” FFRF Staff Attorney Sam Grover wrote to Rienzi Mayor Walter Williams.

The letter also referred to a similar case in North Carolina, where a city agreed to pay $500,000 for having a religious display.

The flag, according to the letter, was reported by a community member in Rienzi to the FFRF.

While the flag is currently down, Mayor Williams told Fox News it will go back up.

“We’re gonna fly that flag again,” he said, “and I’m hoping it’s not going to be long” before it happens.”

News Mississippi has reached out to Mayor Williams and is awaiting a response.
