From Low-Riders to Down-Home Blues, Plenty to Fill Your Mississippi Weekend

JACKSON, MISS– If you’re ready to get out of the house and away from the routine this weekend, there’s plenty going on around the state.

If your weekends revolve around fixing up the truck or tweaking the hydraulics, you’ll want to head to Biloxi for Scrapin’ the Coast.

“We’ve got things that are beyond what anyone could ever imagine,” says Myles Holcomb, coordinator of the event, “people are coming from Canada, Florida, California. Cars and trucks in the hydraulics competition bouncing around, flipping over.”

There’s also antiques, customs, food, music, and a bikini contest. For more information, see the Scrapin’ the Coast website www.scrapinthecoast.com.

If dirty hands and a new hobby are right up your alley, then go to Vicksburg for a beginner pottery class.

“I start off at the very basics,” says Lisa Grant, teacher of the class, “so even if you’ve never touched the clay before, to throwing on the wheel, to throwing it in the kiln.”

Grant says Saturdays are reserved for beginners, so if you’re wanting to try something new, that’s the best day to get in the clay. To get signed up for class, visit artatheart.webs.com .

And for the best of the Mississippi Delta blues, the Bentonia Blues Festival just outside the Blue Front Cafe has what you’re looking for. Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, L.C. Ulmer, 19th Street Red, Bill Abel and more will set up shop for an all-Saturday celebration of the blues.

“It’s a big ol’ festival in a tiny little place,” says Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, “people coming from all over.”

And what does Duck say you can expect from this?

“A lot of heat, and a lot of music,” says Duck, “and that’s for certain.”
