After the recent tragedies in Parkland, Florida and Sante Fe, Texas, school safety is on the mind of every American. In an effort to ensure that these violent acts don’t occur in Mississippi, Governor Bryant has established the School Safety Task Force.
In a post to his Facebook page, the Governor said that the task force will bring together members of the law enforcement, education and mental health communities to “evaluate existing school safety laws and policies and make recommendations to strengthen them”.
Speaking to the importance of this issue, Governor Bryant said that it must continue to receive their full attention.
“Protecting our schoolchildren as part of our overall mission to ensure public safety will remain my highest priority,” he said.
Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, Marshall Fisher, has been tabbed to lead the task force. The full executive order from the Governor’s office can be seen below:
During the 2018 legislative session, bills that aimed to arm Mississippi teachers gained some traction but eventually died. Others have suggested creating safety plans and teams at schools, similar to those created by churches across the state.
