Heart Surgery for Natchez Mayor, Brown Recovering

By John Mott Coffey, with News Mississippi affiliate WQNZ

NATCHEZ, Miss.–Natchez Mayor Butch Brown was recuperating from a heart operation Monday at a Baton Rouge hospital.

“It was a very successful heart bypass surgery. He is in full recovery at our Lady of the Lake,” son Sessions Brown said Monday evening.

He said the mayor did not have a heart attack.

Brown, 71 is expected to be discharged by the end of the week from Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and back home, his son said.

It’s uncertain when the mayor will return to his City Hall office, Sessions said, but “The city will run its business as usual. He’ll be back at the helm in no time.”

The Board of Aldermen today has a regularly scheduled meeting, where Alderwoman Joyce Arceneaux-Mathis is expected to preside as mayor pro tem.

Brown is serving his third term as mayor. Most recently elected in 2012, he previously served from 1992-2000.

Brown has endured a bout of cancer and was treated in a Houston hospital in 2011.
