Jackson woes cause statewide problems

The busted infrastructure of the capital city isn’t just a Jackson problem. It is a Mississippi problem, according to Senator John Horne.

“Jackson is the front door of the state,” said Sen. Horne. “Dignitaries, businessmen outside the state come here.. and right now, our capital city is an embarrassment.”

The senator told News Mississippi that businesses have overlooked Mississippi based on the condition of Jackson’s infrastructure.

“Recently we had a major retailer looking in downtown Jackson, and they said based on demographics they wanted to open in downtown,” said Horne. “So they sent some of their people, and when they got here, they said ‘what is this place, get us the heck out of here.'”

Horne said that was just one of the opportunities for economic growth that the state missed because of Jackson’s condition.

The Capitol Complex Improvement District bill, or House Bill 1226, designates the areas surrounding the Capitol in Jackson as one that would receive tax dollars from the state to make desperately needed repairs to the roads and infrastructure.

The bill passed the House 104-12, and has been passed to the Senate for further discussion. Click here to read more on the bill.
