Kevontae’ Ruggs enters transfer portal

Sophomore linebacker Kevontae’ Ruggs has entered the NCAA Transfer portal. The news was first reported by Matt Zenitz of AL.com.

This is big news for an Ole Miss defense that relied heavily on young linebackers last season. Ruggs started the season opener against Texas Tech in Houston. He suffered a concussion in that game, missed the next the game and struggled to crack the rotation after that. Ruggs tallied 16 total tackles and played in 11 games as a freshman.

This news comes a few weeks after Matt Luke announced that Ruggs was suspended indefinitely from the team. Luke said at the time the suspension would allow Ruggs to return to the team, but did not provide a timeframe for Ruggs’ return.

Ruggs was set to play outside linebacker in new defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre’s 3-4 scheme
