Laurel student shot dead on his 17th birthday

The Laurel School District reported that a 17-year-old student was killed by an 18-year old. 

Mekel Antwon Crumbly was arrested and charged for the murder of Tamerick Drummond around midnight Wednesday.

The victims father, Maurice Pruitt S., said that Wednesday was Tamerick’s 17th birthday.

Crumbly was booked at the Jones County Jail.

The Laurel School District has released the following statement:

“We are saddened by the tragic loss of a member of the Laurel School District family, our priority is to support our students and teachers as they grieve the loss of a student and classmate. We have provided additional counseling support at the high school for our students as they process their grief. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this extremely difficult time.”
