Man arrested for Fortification Street murder, another charged but not in custody

The Jackson Police Department has arrested a suspect in the murder of 23-year-old Chelsie Lynn Kirschten, who was shot in the back while stopped at a red light on Fortification Street in a white Pontiac G6. 

Officers arrested 21-year-old Nicholas Coats and charged him with murder on Monday.

When officers arrived at the scene on August 17, Kirschten was pronounced dead as a result of the gunshot would. It was learned that the victim and a front seat passenger were at the intersection of Fortification Street near State Street, waiting for the signal to change, when a black man in dark clothing approached the car and shot into the driver side with a silver handgun.

The vehicle continued to travel eastbound on Fortification Street until it came to a stop near the interstate.

Police are also looking for Lidarious Dixon who they believe was involved. He has been charged with murder and shooting into a vehicle, but is not in custody.
