A Mississippi Deputy survived several gunshot wounds over the weekend.
On Friday night, 33-year-old Randy Vaught led police on a chase that eventually ended at a home in Byhalia. Vaught went into the house, and Deputy Daniel Tatum ran around the house and opened the back door.
According to Fox News, Tatum was shot in the arm, shoulder & leg as soon as he opened the door. Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson says that Tatum played dead on the back patio and hoped that he wouldn’t be shot in the head.
Vaught then shot Tatum twice more in the chest, but his bulletproof vest saved his life.
“[The vest], without any question, saved his life,” Sheriff Dickerson said. “Had he not had that vest on he would have expired immediately.”
Tatum was later airlifted to a Memphis hospital, and he is expected to make a full recovery.
As for Vaught, he and police engaged in a 4-hour standoff that ended with Vaught shooting himself on the front lawn of the home.
Vaught reportedly left a suicide note, and he was out on bond for statuary rape charges. Reports have also stated that Vaught was seen using meth earlier that day.
