A husband and wife team from the Mississippi Department of Corrections has donated supplies to two third-grade classrooms who were affected by Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas.

Probation and Parole Agent Barbara B. Gill and her husband Steven Gill collected book bags, crayons, notebooks, and pencils through the Gulfport and Biloxi Probation Parole offices.

“People helped us when Hurricane Katrina hit,” said Barbara Gill, “We appreciate this opportunity to give back. This was a group effort by the MDOC employees.”

Barbara came up with the idea after seeing a Facebook post about Adopt a Classrom.org. This nonprofit organization helps teachers in need of classroom supplies.

The Gills headed to Houston where they met at World Harvest Outreach Seventh-day Adventist Church, a designated distribution center, just this week.

Donors included MDOC employees, offenders that were on supervised house arrest, probation and parole, Food Giant, Academy Sports, and local attorney George Blair.
