Miss. News Briefs: Meridian Market Murder Update, Stolen Robot

JACKSON, Miss.–Here are a few stories from around the state to get your weekend off to a bang:

POLICE HURT IN WRECKS
If you see blue lights, flashing against the night sky, better watch where you’re going. Hurt in a wreck Thursday night, two Meridian police officers and the person they say pulled out in front of them. It happened about 9:30 when the cops were on a call. and ended up slamming into that other car. Everybody went to the hospital. Injuries non-life-threatening.

MDWFP GUN STOLEN
If you know who stole an AR-15 rifle from a Wildlife Fisheries and Parks truck, you need to tell the police, now. They’re lloking for whomever busted the window out of a truck at Academy Sports in the capital city and ran off with the gun. Last month another wildlife officer’s truck was busted into and a pistol and another AR-15 were stolen, also in Jackson.

MOLESTOR GOES TO PRISON
Keeping your kids safe, it’s two and a half years in the federal pen for Matthew Blake Whitt of Mooreville. This is the guy that cops say was a substitute teacher when he got a 15-year-old to “engage in illegal sexual conduct”. He’s now a convicted sex offender, He pleaded guilty in September, got his sentence Thursday.

JUDGE GAVE ME TOO LONG
The judge gave me too long to serve says former famed football coach Dwight Bowling of northeast Mississippi. He’s got a hearing to see if that stands up July 8. He said the judge gave him 25 years and the law says no more than 13 years for the sex crimes against kids that he committed.

MERIDIAN MARKET MURDER UPDATE
They used his bank card until the money was all gone. That was testimony at the hearing for Shon Byrd, just 16, who police say shot 87-year-old Billy Putnam in the parking lot of Vowell’s Market in Meridian.

SCHOOLS TO RETOOL RATING SYSTEM
Mississippi schools might have to be retooling the school rating system again in 2015, and possibly again in 2016, adding in ACT scores at standardized tests.

STARKVILLE DRUG BUST
Big drug bust in Starkville. 18 people popped. Oktibbeha County Sheriff, Starkville police, corrections, clay county, West Point, all setting this up for over a year.

BOSS ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT
Flowood If you’ve ever had a boss make a pass at you, this was a whole lot more serious. Brian Williamson, boss at the Corner Bakery, arrested on charges of sexual battery against two underage employees.
