Mississippi Circuit Clerk Quits because of Same Sex Marriage Ruling

GRENADA COUNTY, Miss. – A Mississippi Circuit Clerk has resigned following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same sex marriage.

In a letter to the Grenada County Board of Supervisors, Linda Barnette said the court’s decision violates her core values as a christian.  “My final authority is the Bible,” she wrote.  “I cannot in good conscience issue marriage licenses to same sex couples under my name because the Bible clearly teaches that homosexuality is contrary to God’s plan and purpose for marriage and family.”

Barnette has been the circuit clerk for 24 years.  Her resignation is effective Tuesday.

More than half of Mississippi’s 82 counties have issued marriage licenses to same sex couples since Friday’s historic court ruling.
