Mississippi’s Boys and Girls Club Needs Volunteers

JACKSON, Miss.- The gift of time, that’s all the kids from the Boys and Girls club really need. If you’re looking for a way to give back this holiday season volunteering at one of Mississippi’s Boys and Girls Club may be the perfect fit.

Volunteers make an impact in these kids’ lives that last way beyond the holidays. Ison B. Harris Jr. Vice President of Operations for Boys and Girls Club of Central Mississippi said, “I would love for people to make a commitment, we need tutors at all of our facilities during the school year.”

During the school year the Boys and Girls Club is open Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for the younger children and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for teens ages 13 to 18. During the summer time the club is open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Boys and Girls Club is a non-profit organization. The Central Mississippi area serves about 650 kids a day and each child is provided a meal every day. The children take time to work on homework and they can also get involved in the club’s programs which include: art, career development, character and leadership skills, health and life skills and sports activities.

“We want to be in line with the schools. It would be a really neat opportunity if we could get a bunch of tutors to come in here to help those kids get to their reading level or to help them with math.” Harris said, “A critical time for young people is that 3 to 6 time frame, typically when parents aren’t home, and that’s when we’re open. We pride ourselves on that.”
