A child in Moss Point has died after being run over by his mother’s vehicle.
The accident occurred on Lilly Orchard Road on Sunday when 5-year-old Drayke Whittington got out of the car to pick up some Mardi Gras beads that his sister had thrown out of the window. Sheriff Mike Ezell says that Drayke’s mother, Melissa Shields, did not realize that her son had jumped out of the car and began to back up. She did not see Drayke and accidentally ran him over.
The child died while being airlifted to a Signing River Hospital.
A media release from the Jackson Sheriff’s Department states that no charges have been filed and the accident is still under investigation. The case will be presented to a county grand jury.
