MSU Practice Report: Mississippi State Wants to Stay With What Works

It’s Mississippi State’s open date, and it seems the weekend off has come at the right time for the Bulldogs. Speaking to Coach Joe Moorhead on Tuesday night, he was optimistic that his injured players will be ready to return when his team takes the field against LSU next weekend. Asked about the changes he made to his offense, changes that led to 349 yards rushing against a tough Auburn defense, Moorhead made it clear that he wants his playcalling to focus on what’s working at the time, and if that means sacrificing balance, then so be it.

You will get a similar vibe from quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, who set a career high in carries Saturday night, toting the ball 28 times. Fitzgerald made it very clear, the only statistic he’s worried about is wins and losses, and if that means carrying the ball 40 times or not at all, it’s all the same to him.

Mississippi State will face an opponent in LSU after the bye that has a lot of similarities to the Auburn team they just dispatched, a struggling offense paired up with an outstanding defense. It will be interesting to see how much of the gameplan from last Saturday will make its way to Tiger Stadium when the Bulldogs kick off that evening.
