MSU Practice Report: Mississippi State’s Defense Ready for a Familiar Face

Mississippi State and Florida’s meeting on Saturday night will be one of familiarity, with Dan Mullen having an in-depth knowledge of the Bulldogs’ personnel, and the Bulldog defense having insight into Mullen’s offensive scheme having practiced against for most of their careers.  With all that in play, does either side have a distinct advantage against the other?  Defensive coordinator Bob Shoop doesn’t feel his group or Mullen has the other hand.

Senior defensive end Gerri Green echoed some of those sentiments, saying that after Sunday’s players only meeting, the team is back on track mentally, ready to take on Florida and get the first SEC win of the season.

Another leader who was a big part of Sunday’s meeting was defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, and he was in sync was his defensive co-hort. Simmons said he and his teammates are anxious to get back to the field and prove that Saturday’s performance is not what this defense is built for.

Defensively, MSU had a decent showing up until the fourth quarter when the dam finally broke after the offense put the defense into bad positions following turnovers or inability to move the ball. Going up against a Florida team that has not been explosive on offense thus far, the Bulldogs could be poised for a big rebound this weekend, but they’ll have to do it against the former head coach and his offense that will run right up against them.

We’ll talk about this and much more tomorrow on SportsTalk Mississippi, we’ll have the whole crew live at Timeout Lounge at the Golden Moon Resort from 3-6. Tune in on your local SuperTalk affiliate or on supertalk.fm.
