College basketball season is right around the corner, and many expect that the Mississippi State women will be in the mix to make a run at a national championship.
After claiming their first regular-season SEC title in program history last season, the Bulldog women have been projected to repeat as SEC champs in 2019 by a voting panel comprised of SEC and national media members.
MSU won a nation’s-best 37 games in 2017-18 as they lost just two games. One loss was to South Carolina in the SEC Tournament final, and the other was the heartbreaking loss to Notre Dame in the NCAA Championship game.
In addition to the team recognition, senior center Teaira McCowan was selected as the as the SEC’s preseason ‘Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.’ Throughout her career, McCowan has proven to be a force in the paint on both ends of the court.
Joining McCowan on the ‘Preseason All-SEC’ team is grad-transfer Anriel Howard, who comes over from Texas A&M. The pair are the SEC’s active career rebounders, with McCowan’s 1,015 boards sitting just ahead of Howard’s 1,002.
The Bulldogs host Central Missouri, the reigning DII champs, for an exhibition on November 2nd before they officially open the season against Southeast Missouri State on the 6th.
