New Mississippi Lawmaker “Elected” Without Election

CARTHAGE, Miss.–LEake, Neshoba, Rankin and Scott counties will have a new state representative to replace Bennett Malone in the House. Jay Mathis, of Carthage, won the seat that Malone vacated by retiring, without there having to be a special election.

Mathis was the only one who ran for the post. No special election was needed, and that’ll save you some money.

Mathis, a Republican, will serve the rest of Malone’s term, about nine months. He has not been sworn in yet.
