News Mississippi Scam Alert: Watch Out for Fake Utility Bill Collectors

JACKSON, Miss.–If you get a call from someone who claims to be your utility company and they threaten to cut off your power unless you pay up, watch for red flags. That’s the warning from the state Public Service Commission.

Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley said a guy in Mississippi ended up paying over $1,000, even though he knew his bill was current, so these scammers evidently know their business.

Presley said you should know your business, too. If you get a call that seems suspicious, you can report it by calling 1-800-356-6428 or 1-800-281-4418.

“If you receive a call from a person claiming to represent your utility and you question what they are telling you, hang up and call your utility back on their public number to verify, or check your account online to review your statement,” said Presley. “If you believe you are being targeted by this scam, report it immediately.”

He said the PSC has gotten several complaints and the man who paid to keep his lights from being turned off was an Entergy customer.
