Pascagoula Mayor Dane Maxwell announced his run for Public Service Commissioner of the Southern District earlier in January. Maxwell who has only been mayor of Pascagoula since 2017 said if elected he will concentrate on cracking down on telemarketers and robocalling saying they should be receiving harsher punishments.

“I’m going to go to the legislature and try to expand the laws that affect that,” said Maxwell. “I am going to try to get the punishment and the fine levels raised and narrowed down so that it will be more specific.”

Maxwell’s decision to run for PSC comes after the City of Pascagoula conducted an audit and found that there was a $14 million deficit. They have since tried to balance the deficit by cutting expenses and raising taxes to increase revenue.

No other candidates have come forward to step into the position after current Southern District Commissioner Sam Britton announced his candidacy for Secretary of State.
