Police chase ends with MS officer shot at, man accused of kidnapping

Jackson County police have a man in custody they believe was involved in a Mobile kidnapping that led to a police chase, and ended with an officer being shot at.

Terrell Johnson has been charged with Aggravated assault, robbery and kidnapping.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department around 3 a.m. Sunday, Johnson’s car was seen crossing Highway 90 at Market Street when he allegedly ran a red light.

When the officer attempted to signal, the vehicle refused to pull over.

While on pursuit Sheriff Mike Ezell said the officer saw muzzle flashes and heard gun shots. He also saw broken glass and shattered concrete hitting the front of his patrol car. The suspect was throwing items out of the windows on both sides of the vehicle. The chase eventually ended in a casino parking lot, assisted by both Gautier and Biloxi police.

The driver was identified as a Mobile woman, her 16-year-old son was in the front passenger seat. After further investigation Sheriff Ezell said they determined the two were kidnapped by Terrell Lee Johnson who held them at gunpoint and forced the woman to drive the SUV.

She told deputies that Johnson was shooting two guns at the deputy chasing them.

Mobile police were alerted and went to check on the woman’s other son at their home. He was missing and there was evidence of an assault. He was later found and taken to the hospital.

Police have found two guns along Highway 90 which they believe were used by Johnson.

Sheriff Ezell said Johnson is being held at the Adult Detention Center without bond. Mobile Police also have a hold on him for aggravated assault, robber and kidnapping charges.
