Approximately 30 protestors gathered at the Governor’s mansion yesterday to demonstrate their right of free speech and burned a Mississippi State flag as well as a Confederate battle flag.

Members of the {oor People’s Campaign said their protest was about poverty, education, and healthcare in the state and said they believe the state’s flag is at the heart of the issue.

“This is an unfortunate instance of a group exercising their rights in a completely disrespectful and unproductive manner,” said Governor Phil Bryant. “There are better ways to bring attention to one’s opinions than burning the State of Mississippi’s flag on a public street corner.”

News Mississippi has reached out to the members of the Poor People’s Campaign, and are awaiting a response.
