Raise Your Pints for The Monster Mash

Jackson— The Monster Mash here isn’t a song and dance, it’s all about beer.

The Home Brewer’s Association of Middle Mississippi is hosting The Monster Mash. This competition brings home brewed beers from all over the state in for judging. The judges are looking for taste, aroma, mouth feel and proper category placement.

“If they say it’s an IPA, a judge will tell them whether or not they have everything to match that,” says Craig Hendry, president of Raise Your Pints. Raise Your Pints is a grass-roots activist organization that fought for updated beer laws in Mississippi such as increased alcohol by volume content, brewery laws, and home brewing.

HBAMM’s Monster Mash event highlights the changes in Mississippi beer laws over the past three years.

“48 states had legal home brewing in 2012. Mississippi and Alabama were the only two that didn’t allow it, but we have it now,” Craig Hendry says before the laws were changed, home brewer’s would not have been able to host such a competition.

The Monster Mash will be September 27th at Scrooge’s. Register your home brew at their website.
