Rebel OC Longo leaves for UNC

Two days after Ole Miss hired a new defensive coordinator, they’ll begin the search for a new offensive coordinator.

This comes after the news broke that OC Phil Longo has left to take the same position under Mack Brown at North Carolina. Since the season ended Longo also interviewed for multiple head coaching jobs, including UMass and Texas State.

Longo joined Ole Miss prior to the 2017 season after he was hired by Hugh Freeze along with former DC Wesley McGriff.

Under Longo, the Rebel offense finished in the top-10 in total offense in 2018, but the majority of their success came against non-conference opponents. The offense, which featured 2 of the top WRs in the upcoming NFL draft and a top OL prospect, constantly struggled in the red zone.

Longo’s offense features a small selection of plays, and a “chase space” concept that didn’t lend itself well to short yardage and red zone situations, and as a result, the Rebels were overly reliant on big plays.

With the early singing period beginning in eight days, Ole Miss will likely move quickly to hire a new OC.
