Second case of Zika hits Mississippi

NOXUBEE COUNTY, Miss.-  A second case of the Zika Virus has been diagnosed in Mississippi.

A 17-year-old girl from Noxubee County was infected while on a mission trip to Haiti.

Health officials announced Mississippi’s first case of the mesquite carried illness Thursday, after an individual from Madison had been diagnosed. That person also having recently returned from Haiti

Doctors at UMMC do not feel that the virus will be transmitted from these individuals and that the risk of the virus spreading is low.

Zika can cause serious birth defects and for others carries symptoms including fever, rash and joint pain.
