Senate greenlights earmarking BP settlement for the Coast

The bill that would allocate the $2 billion dollar BP Oil Spill settlement to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Restoration fund has officially cleared the Senate.

Senate Bill 2634 was held on a motion to reconsider last Thursday. That motion was tabled Monday.

Senator Barbara Blackmon asked for the bill to be amended, to allocate funds based on the impact of the oil spill throughout the state.

“Obviously the Coast would get the most significant amount of the monies,” said Sen. Blackmon. “But the areas that were affected as a result of losing the tourism and the businesses, that they would also get monies.”

The motion to table failed, and the bill passed the Senate 52-0.
