Severe weather rips through Mississippi

Sunday night and Monday morning saw sustained, heavy storms stall out over the Magnolia State: downed trees and flooding causing the majority of damage.

North and central Mississippi experienced the storms at-length overnight; coastal counties didn’t see heavy weather until after sunrise. The system quickly exited the state this morning, but not before causing flash floods that prompted evacuations of several residences in Rankin County, and leaving thousands without power.

Strong winds are now sweeping through the state as this system moves out, some gusting upwards of 30mph in some areas. National Weather Service and MEMA crews are assessing the damage this morning; News Mississippi will have more information as it becomes available.
