Sheriff to Address Grand Jury Report Saying He’s Incompetent to Run County Jail

JACKSON, Miss. – A Hinds County Grand Jury says Sheriff Tyrone Lewis is incompetent to oversee the county’s jail and recommends the responsibility be taken away from him.

The four page report is based the grand jury’s inspection of the jail and out speaks to a number of issues.  Among them, the report said there are not enough guards at the downtown location and those who are there are inadequately trained and underpaid. The grand jury members who walked through the jail said they saw a prisoner with a cell phone, another exposing himself to them and less-than-ideal conditions for all those living at the facility. In conclusion , the jury agreed that Lewis is unable to keep the public safe from the inmates. In their initial response, Hinds County Supervisors said Thursday night that they had not read the report.

Lewis is scheduled to have a press conference later Friday to address the report.
