The Shooting of Travis Woods: Sheriff Arrests Security Guard for Firing the Shot

LORMAN, Miss.–An arrest has been made in the shooting early Sunday that killed former Jackson State Tigers football player Travis Woods, 23. The shooting also injured another man. The sheriff in Claiborne County told media that the man arrested was security guard Kennan McCallister.

Just why he came outside and fired shots that hit Woods and Ladarris Jackson, 22, sending him to the hospital, was still unclear Tuesday. Sheriff Marvin Lucas said the investigation is not over.

McCallister is charged with aggravated assault.

The shots came after a joint party between two fraternities ended at an event center near the Alcorn State campus, but not actually on the campus. The fight apparently spilled over into the parking lot of Patton’s store.

What started the rumble was what the sheriff was looking into Monday.

Woods is a native of Natchez and finished at JSU in December.
