Skydiving Instructor Dead After Fatal Weekend Jump

LUMBERTON, Miss.–It was a mid-air equipment failure that’s being blamed for killing a skydiving instructor and injuring a student Saturday in Lamar County. A doctor from Florida, 57-year-old Jimmy Horak, was ID’d as the man killed.

Horak was a part-time instructor, also serving as a doctor at the VA in Pensacola. He was called in to help instruct Saturday at the Lumberton Municipal Airport for Gold Coast Skydivers.

Fire officials said five people were involved in the fatal jump. Horak and the student jumped in tandem about 11:30.

Rescuers had a hard time getting to the scene and finally got the two out of the woods about 5 p.m. The survivor had broken bones and a head injury.
