Solar power on the climb in Mississippi

Solar power is expanding across Mississippi.

Mississippi Power partnered with D.E. Shaw Renewables and DEPCOM Power dedicated what is now the state’s largest solar power farm in Sumrall last week.

The energy complex started commercial production of energy last week, producing 52 megawatts from over 215,000 panels on the 600-acre site.

The expansion of solar power doesn’t stop in Sumrall, however, as a 50 MW solar farm is under construction in Hattiesburg, and approval of a fourth facility is pending which would bring energy to Lauderdale County and support the Meridian Naval Air Base.

If the Lauderdale County farm is approved, that would bring the total number of Mississippi Power homes on solar power to 23,000.

Mississippi Power isn’t the only provider bringing solar energy to the state. Entergy Mississippi has three solar projects. One in Hinds County, one in DeSoto County, and one in Brookhaven.
