UPDATE: Grandson charged for killing son of Columbus mayor

COLUMBUS, Miss.- The grandson of Columbus Mayor Robert Smith has been charged with shooting and killing the mayor’s son in his home on Wednesday.

Davius Rashard Smith, 20, has been charged with the murder of Robert E. Smith.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound, however, he would not say at this time where Robert E. Smith Jr., 39, was shot.

Around 2:40 p.m. officials responded to Smith’s home. The Columbus Police Department in collaboration with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are treating the case as a homicide. No arrests have been made at this time.

An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday morning at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Pearl and Merchant said all other evidence was sent to the State Crime Lab in Jackson.

“We are waiting to get the results of the autopsy back before we release any further details,” said Merchant.
