Stolen police cruiser finally returned to deputy

FORREST COUNTY, Miss.- A suspect led deputies on a high-speed chase in Forrest County involving a stolen police car.  Shots were also fired near Hattiesburg.

A deputy was called to the scene of a crime where he learned that a victim was hit on the head at a residence. When the deputy left his unit (vehicle) to call for medical aid another person showed up on the scene and jumped into the officers vehicle.

The suspect then fled the scene in the cruiser with the deputies K-9 unit still inside. He notified dispatch that the unit had been stolen and a patrol quickly located the vehicle on Highway 49 headed north.

As deputies pursued, the suspect crashed into the woods near 826 Johnston Circle in the Hub City.
“At that point there was at least one gunshot heard from the vehicle,” said Forrest County Sheriff’s Department Investigator Nick Calico. “Deputies and Mississippi Highway Patrol Officers then approached the vehicle, and it appeared the suspect had a self-inflected gunshot wound.”

The suspect was then taken to Forrest General Hospital but his condition has not been released. The unit and K-9 were returned to the sheriff’s department.

No officers, nor the K-9, were injured in the pursuit.
