On Tuesday, Mississippians headed to the polls to elect three new Representatives to the state House and the results are in.
In House District 32 Solomon Osborne won the race with 79% of the vote. Troy D. Brown Sr. received 20.9% of the vote and a total of 1,066 votes were cast in the special election. Osborne will now take over for former Representative Willie Perkins (D) who resigned after becoming a chancery judge. HD 32 is in Leflore County.
In House District 71, Ronnie Crudup Jr. is the new Representative. Crudup won with 63.12% of the vote while Edelia J. Carthan received 24.26% of the vote and Stephanie Skipper received 12.23% of the vote. There was a drastically low voter turnout with a little over 3% turning out to vote in HD 71 which is in Hinds County. There were a total of 508 votes cast in the special election. Hinds has 13,734 registered voters. The seat became vacant when former Representative Adrienne Wooten (D) resigned to become a circuit judge.
House District 101 in Lamar County is the only race that will go to a runoff on April 2nd between Kent McCarty and Steven Utroska. McCarty received 38.69% of the vote with Utroska taking home 23.47% of the vote. With the highest voter turnout of the three special elections, roughly 19% of voters turned out and 3,200 ballots were cast. The seat became vacant when former Representative Brad Touchstone (R) resigned to become a youth court judge.
With 2019 being an election year, most of the individuals running in these races have already qualified to run in the August primaries.
