Vancleave man shot after refusing to put down weapon

JACKSON COUNTY, Miss.- Deputies were called to the scene of a man holding a handgun and refusing to give it up on Monday night.

When they arrived they found 47-year-old William Thompson with the weapon. When asked to put it down, Thompson refused.

However, this was not the first time deputies had been at this residence that week. Several times prior to Monday night they were at the home and said Thompson had threatened them.

The deputies tried to calm Thompson down. When that was unsuccessful they asked him to put the weapon away, when he continued to refuse he was shot.

He was taken to the hospital in Ocean Springs to be treated for his injuries. He was placed in the Intensive Care Unit, his condition is not known at this time.

Warren Strain, with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, who are now heading up the case, said that they could confirm the incident but could not give anymore information than that because the case was currently being investigated.
