Verdict against former Jackson County sheriff thrown out

HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The verdict reached by a jury in a sexual harassment case has been thrown out.

U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett has thrown out a jury’s verdict against former Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd in a sexual harassment case. His reasoning, the jury had no evidence to base their verdict because they found Byrd had not sexually harassed Deputy Kristen Seibert. She made the claims in May of 2012.

After Starrett’s ruling Byrd is no longer bound to pay the $260,000 in damages that the jury awarded Seibert due to claimed emotional distress.

The verdict could still be appealed. The county had no comment except to say that they were satisfied with the judge’s ruling reports the Sun Herald.
