William G. Cheney, Jr. to serve as Assistant Secretary of State of Lands

Jackson, MSSecretary of State Delbert Hosemann announced Friday that William “Bill” G. Cheney, Jr. has been promoted to serve as Assistant Secretary of State of Lands.  Cheney has served as Senior Attorney in the Public Lands Division for 17 years, and Hosemann said is he an asset to the state of Mississippi.

“Bill has been an asset to this Agency for the past two decades and has been instrumental in managing and maintaining 16th Section Public School Trust Lands and increasing their revenue for school children,” said Secretary Hosemann. “We are pleased to announce this well-deserved promotion.”

As Assistant Secretary of State of Lands, Cheney will be responsible for advising the Secretary of State on matters related to public lands, serving as an advocate of the policies of the Secretary of State pertaining to public lands, and drafting legislation related to public lands.

He will also work with other local, state, and federal agencies on matters pertaining to state lands. Cheney will continue to work with local school districts and other parties in the oversight, management and leasing of 16th Section Public School Trust Lands.

Cheney said this is an opportunity to continue to serve the people of Mississippi.

“I am honored to accept the position and appreciate the trust Secretary Hosemann has in my abilities to work with school districts in managing their 16th Section Land while working on other public matters as well,” said Cheney.
