Winter Weather Advisory issued across Mississippi

As temperatures drop and snow continues to fall in certain portions of the state, the National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Winter Advisory Warning that extends into North Mississippi.

“A strong cold front has moved through the region and a potent storm system will move across the Mid-South today. Rain, freezing rain and sleet will transition snow as cold air filters into the

Mid-South. Snow is expected to taper off this afternoon. Significant snow and ice accumulations will be possible across much of the region. In addition, strong northwest winds will occur as the much colder air filters into the region.”

* WHAT…Heavy mixed precipitation occurring. Plan on difficult travel conditions. Additional snow accumulations of up to two inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze are expected.

* WHERE…Portions of East Arkansas, North Mississippi, Southeast Missouri and West Tennessee.

* WHEN…Until 6 PM today.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are occurring. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.”

The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued a Winter Advisory Warning of their own across the state until 6 p.m. as colder temperatures persist.

“A light wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow will end in the next few hours in areas east of Interstate 55 with wintry precipitation already finished elsewhere. Little to no additional wintry accumulation is expected but many roads remain hazardous due to snow and ice cover. *

WHERE…Portions of central Mississippi, north central Mississippi, northeast Mississippi and northwest Mississippi. *

WHEN…Until 6 PM today.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… Use caution when traveling, especially in open areas. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.”
