Winter weather impacts roads in Mississippi

As winter weather roll across the state, road conditions are expected to decline. 

I-55 at Waterworks Curve is shut down with 18wheelers stuck on the ice.

As of 9pm Friday, MDOT had reported the following closures:

· Marion County
o SR 44 Bridger over Pearl River
· Warren County
o US 61 from Vicksburg Airport Rd to the Warrant/Claiborne County Line.

 

Due to winter weather crossing the state, the Mississippi Highway Patrol has responded to a high number of traffic crashes on interstate and highway systems.

As of 3 p.m. Friday, MHP has investigated 62 traffic crashes and responded to 141 calls for assistance statewide.

Due to possible icing of the roadways we encourage motorists to travel only in emergency situations, lower vehicle speeds, and use extreme caution.

Ice has been reported to the Mississippi Department of Transportation in the following counties:

Adams, Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Carroll, Claiborne, Copiah, DeSoto, Franklin, Hinds, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Jefferson, Kemper, Lauderdale, Leflore, Lincoln, Madison, Marshall, Montgomery, Newton, Panola, Prentiss, Quitman, Rankin, Scott, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Warren, Washington and Yazoo.

There are currently no roads closed in Mississippi, according to MDOT.

Tunica Co. reports 2.25 inches of snow; Nearly 3 inches in Desoto Co.

Pearl PD has the US49 bridge to I 20 closed due to ice. Use US80 as alternate.

The US Hwy 49 north flyover (at the stack) to I-20 is OPEN at this time. Stay tuned for updates & approach bridges w/ caution, per the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has stated that sleet has now been reported all along i-20.

 

 

Report from SuperTalk’s Steve Knight out of Corinth: Snow accumulation is about ¾ as of 8am. Roadways are slippery on hwy 45 between Alcorn and Prentiss counties.

So far, deteriorating conditions have been reported along I-55 in Tate and DeSoto County.

 

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department is urging people to stay home if at all possible.

Some wintry mix accumulation is already being reported in Corinth, Panola County, and along Highway 72, Highway 6 in Panola, and along I-55 Northbound.

Highway 305 & Byhalia Road has multiple stalled motorists due to the hazardous road conditions, and roads are not passable according to the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office.

Also, Highway 51 from Commerce Street in Hernando to Pleasant Hill Road in Nesbit is shut down due to weather conditions.
