After sow and cold weather this week United Blood Services and Mississippi Blood Services are saying that there is a serious nationwide shortage of blood.

Area hospitals are using record amounts and the blood banks are seeing a record low amount of donors. Mississippi Blood Services is urging donors to donate as soon as possible to help make sure that blood is available to Mississippi patients.

To help, United Blood Services is asking for donations. January 19th from 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the United Blood Services’ mobile unit, which will be parked in the parking lot of Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi located at 1100 Belk Boulevard in Oxford. No appointment is necessary, and donors can report straight to the mobile unit in the parking lot to give blood.

In addition, Mississippi Blood Services is asking people to give blood in Central Mississippi.

MBS is also offering Sunday hours this weekend at the Flowood Main Center and they will also be open Saturday, January 20th from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 21st from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for those needing non-weekday hours to donate.

“We are hoping that being open extended hours this weekend we will have some more people come out and hang out with us, watch a movie, donate blood and platelets, and help us save some lives,” said Emily Austin with Mississippi Blood Services.
